As a child, I was taught in Sunday School the song ‘ Man shall not live by bread alone’. As I grew up, I find that this is absolute truth. As I go through difficult times, it is the Words of God that comforted me. It is His promises that gave me strength to move on in life. His words are like a lamp giving light to my path.

However, do you know, there is a hidden treasure in Luke 4:4:

But Jesus answered him, saying,“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”

The scripture which Jesus was referring to when He said ‘It is written’ is from Deuteronomy 8:3:

So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.

In the wilderness, the Israelites did not sort the scriptures for comfort. They were merely trying to survive. The LORD led them all the way, from Egypt. From miracles to miracles, the LORD exhibited His sovereignty, His dominance and His power. Yet, He was the LORD who protected the Israelites and provided for their needs. In every steps, there were miracles. From the 10 plagues, to the parting of the Red Sea, to provision of water and food to the fighting against the Amelekites, to manna from heaven, to quail for dinner….all the way, the LORD was their God, their LORD. Even their sandals did not wear out. God looked into every details of their lives.

Remember that when the Lord led the Israelite out of Egypt, He always say “I am the LORD”. He is the LORD. By His words, the red sea parted, by His words, manna dropped down from heaven. By His words, the Lazarus was raised from dead, leprosy was healed, the blind could see, the lame could walk. Simply by the words that proceeds from the mouth of God.

So what God wants of His people is that we should not be like the pagans, working and worrying for our daily needs — what we wear, what we eat, where we live. What God want us to know is that He is the LORD. By His words, miracles happen.

It is good to know that we need the word of God as our strength for our lives. But the hidden treasure lies in knowing that Jesus is the LORD. When we know this secret, we can believe that everything in our lives, Jesus will take care of. We we believe this, we unlock the power of God. When we believe, we unlock miracles. We tap into His power. Just like the woman with a flow of blood touched His garment and tap His healing power.

The hidden treasure lies in knowing that Jesus is the LORD.

So what Jesus want of us, is that we do not labor and worry about our daily needs. But to seek Him, to know His the LORD, to simply rest in Him, to trust Him, to know He is sovereign and yet He cares for us.
