How do I know that a calling is from God and not from men?

My child, Jesus has cautioned us that there will be many false prophets in the end times (Matthew 7:15-20) and to identify them by their fruits. We are to be careful not to trust people easily but to test the spirits (1 John 4:1-3). Do not let anyone come to you and say you are called by God and hence you should obey and start selling everything to give to them.

Know this, my child, if God calls you to serve Him full time, all the following conditions must be satisfied:

  • God will show it to you directly and not through a another person.  God will reveal either through His words as you spend time on your own reading the Bible or when you listen to sermons. God will also reveal to you through His Holy Spirit in you. You will know in your heart and mind that it is from God and you will have the peace from God;
  • God may show you through visions, dreams, prophesies or circumstances or some miraculous happening / provision;
  • God will give you the desire, equip you, provide you will all the resources that you need to serve in that specific ministry and He will prosper you in your ministry as you serve. You may face obstacles and challenges but God will strengthen you with His words and encouragement.

If you do not receive anything from God but a fellow Christian come and tell you that you are called, you should personally seek God’s direction until you are certain it is from God. Just as Jesus would not do anything on His own authority unless He sees the Father doing (John 5:19), do not act on your own accord.

Once you are very certain that God has called you into a specific ministry, my child, do like what Andrew, Peter, James and John did. Follow Jesus immediately.  Fix your minds on the things of God (Matthew 16:24-27, Colossians 3:2) and on the promise that Jesus has given us (Matthew 19:29). Do not doubt and for every step you take in your ministry, seek the LORD’s guidance, never act on your own authority (John 5:19).
