Why is Jesus called Jesus Christ?

Christ is a Greek word that means annointed One. The same word, with the same meaning “annointed One”  in Hebrew is Messiah . In the Old Testament, there were many prophesies (written in Hebrew) about the coming of the Messiah. The people of Israel who had suffered for hundreds of years under foreign empires were looking forward to the fulfilment of the prophets’ prophesies about the Messiah who will deliver them from their sufferings.

When Jesus came on earth as a human being, He revealed that He was the Messiah. The language mainly used by authors of the New Testament, e,g, the Gospel of Matthew, was Greek. Hence, they addressed Jesus as Jesus Christ (Greek), meaning Jesus the Messiah (Hebrew). Read more here.
