Get to know God

The Names of God

In Exodus 6:3, God said to Moses, “I am Yahweh—‘the Lord.’  I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty’—but I did not reveal my name, Yahweh, to them. ” In fact, in Exodus 3:15 was the first time the LORD revealed His name as Yahweh.

The scriptures had stated many names of God. Each name of God tells us the relationship between God and His people. The name Yahweh, which means I AM, tells us that God is all-mighty, all-powerful and yet He is our LORD. He is sovereign, no one controls Him, He alone controls everything.  He holds absolute power of the entire universe. He is the beginning and the end, He depends on no one but everything depends on Him. He created everything and He alone writes the history of mankind. He loves His people, He is our warrior and He fights our battle. He is our peace, He watches over us and protects us. He is our strength, our salvation. He is God Most High.

In Genesis we read about Abraham calling on the name of the LORD. Essentially, this means knowing our LORD as our provider, our shield, our strength, our God, our everything. Knowing that He is faithful and He loves us for He is what His names tell us.

My child, whenever you are troubled in spirit, meditate on the names of the LORD. Listed below are some of the names of God stated in the scriptures. For full list, click here.
