Get to know God

God stood by Abram

If we read this story very quickly, we will interpret the parting of Abram and Lot as just a usual day to day event. However, if you are someone who have had experienced some problems with a relative or friend and you had to choose to part ways, you will understand that it can be a hurtful event.

Did you notice that in Genesis 13:14, after Lot parted, the LORD reminded Abram of His promise to give Abram descendants and the land the LORD is giving to Abram and his descendants forever? This is not the first time the LORD gave this promise to Abram. The promise to make Abram a great nation was given in Genesis 12:2. The promised land was first mentioned to Abram in Genesis 12:7 when Abram was in Shechem (in Canaan).  Why was there a reminder at that specific time?

The LORD was comforting Abram and getting him to focus on his calling and the great blessings the LORD had planned for him. Instead of feeling sad over what had happened, the LORD came to comfort Abram and reminded him to focus his on the favour God has for him.

Did you notice…

Abram always built altars to the LORD

The following scriptures stated that Abraham (Abram) built altars to the LORD:

  1. Genesis 12:7 (At Shechem, after the LORD told Abram about the promised land).
  2. Genesis 12:8 (Between Bethel and Ai, Abram built an altar and called on the name of the LORD).
  3. Genesis 13:4 (When Abram was back to the same altar he built between Bethel and Ai, Abram called on the name of the LORD).
  4. Genesis 13:18 (In Hebron, after parting from Lot and after the LORD reminded Abram of His promises).
  5. Genesis 22:3-13 (When the LORD tested Abram– to sacrifice Isaac).

We can see from these scriptures that Abram’s focus was very much on the LORD. He had a personal walk with the LORD.

Are you wondering…

What does it mean to call on the name of the LORD?

In Genesis 13:4, it was stated that Abram “called on the name of the LORD”. In fact in Genesis 12:8, when Abram built an altar to the LORD, it was also stated that Abram called on the name of the LORD. What does it mean to call on the name of the LORD?

The first time this phrase was used was in Genesis 4:6 when it was stated that “man began to call on the name of the LORD”.  In Genesis 26:25, we also read that after the LORD appeared to Isaac, he bullt an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.

In simple terms, to call on the name of the LORD is to worship the LORD, to praise Him, to give thanks to Him, to have faith and believe that He loves us and will help us in all our troubles, is to turn him for help… in other words, is to have a relationship with the LORD, a personal walk with the LORD.

How to become a believer?

You can be a believer simply by saying this prayer:

Dear God, thank you for so wonderfully make me and thank you for sending your Son, LORD Jesus to die for me so that I can have the blessed life that you intended for me — a life of leadership and fruitfulness. Now I believe and accept Jesus as my LORD and Saviour. I believe that from this time forth, I am a new creation, I am born again and I have the eternal life that Jesus came to give me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
