Matthew 9:9-13 – Jesus called Matthew

Notes for parents and guardians

Jesus has authority to forgive sins…

We have previously discussed about the root cause of illness. There are both natural causes and spiritual causes of illness. In this reading on Matthew 9:1-8, it is very clear that the paralytic man’s illness was a result of his sins because Jesus said specifically that his sins had been forgiven (Matthew 9:2).

The good news we learn from this reading is that regardless of how great a person’s sins may be, Jesus, the Son of God has the authority to forgive sins.

You may be wondering, does it mean that people can simply “get away with murder” ? How can a God of justice allows this to happen?

Beloved, it is all God’s grace.

It’s all God’s grace.

What is grace? Being gracious involves being kind and compassionate towards others, regardless of the circumstances. When we say it’s all God’s grace, it means that God chooses to forgive us even when we have done wrong. How can a God of justice allow us to get away from punishment when we have done wrong? It is because Jesus has carried our sins and died in our place. Because Jesus has died in our place, the price is paid for and God cannot punish us again. Jesus is the precious, beloved Son of God, the only Son of God. God chose to send His only beloved Son to come and sacrifice for us so that He, a God of justice, can be gracious to us. So that we can escape the punishment that we deserve because of our sins.

Why did God do that? It is all because God loves us immensely……Why was Jesus willing to leave His throne in heaven and chose to come to this world to suffer humiliation, accusations, abuse and death on our behalf? It is because Jesus, the Son of God, and who is God, loves us….

All that God asks of us is to believe that He loves us so much that He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to die in our place, so that our sins can be wiped away and God can be gracious to us.

All that God asks of us is to believe..

If you search through all the miracles recorded in all the 4 gospels in the Bible, you will not be able to find a single occasion where Jesus asked the sick person to be willing to repent from his sins first before Jesus healed him. Not a single occasion.

Jesus often said “your sins are forgiven” or “your faith has made you well”.

Why didn’t Jesus set repentance from sins as a prerequisite to receive healing? It is because Jesus knew He was going to fully pay the price for mankind by dying in our place. He did that because it is indeed God’s will for us to be healthy and healed. Beloved, God’s decision for you to be healed was made the moment He decided to send Jesus to come and die in your place. Your healing happened more than 2000 years ago when Jesus was crucified on the cross. All that you need to do to claim this healing is to believe in Jesus, to believe that He is the Son of God sent to carry your sins and your diseases, so that you can be healed and live life to the fullest (John 10:10).

Therefore, never ever believe that because you are still struggling in sin, you cannot expect God to heal you. Simply believe that God loves you so much and Jesus has paid it all for you. Healing is your inheritance.

Keep believing that your healing had taken place more than 2000 years ago…

Remember

Never think that because you have committed some serious sins in the past or have even rejected Jesus in the past and hence you deserve this punishment or believe that God is punishing you and will not heal you.

Simply believe that Jesus loves you so much that while you were still a sinner, He died for you (Romans 5:8-9). He loves you. Meditate on Jesus’ love and compassion for you. He is willing to heal you. Often, even before people fully understand how much Jesus loves them, when they just take one simple step to believe, healing manifested. Sometimes, healing is instantaneous. However, sometimes, it is not. When you do not see instantaneous healing, healing is still taking place. In fact, believe that healing has taken place the moment you believe and prayed. God works in ways we cannot understand. He may choose to heal you instantaneously, or gradually, or cause circumstances to direct you to the right doctor or to consume the right food or to change some lifestyle… Simply believe that He loves you and His decision to heal you was made more than 2000 years ago. Keep believing that healing has taken place. Keep praising the LORD and you will see miracles taking place.

Do not let your heart be troubled. Sing praises to God when you are fearful. Miracles will manifest.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
    that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.

Luke 4:18-19

Do you want to receive Jesus into your life?

Jesus is God’s gift to you. When you believe in Jesus, you are saved, crossing from death to life (John 5:24, 6:54). You cannot achieve this salvation through any amount of good works because human effort can never meet the perfect standards of God (John 6:63). Only the grace of God can grant you this salvation and you can receive it only by believing in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9). By the blood of Jesus, all your sins (past, present and future) are forgiven and the Holy Spirit of God that gives eternal life (John 6:63) can live in you forever (John 14:16). All it takes is to believe and say a simple prayer like this:

“Dear LORD Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God and that Your love for me has driven You to leave Your throne in heaven to come to this world to die in my place so that I can be forgiven. Thank you that You suffered and died for me. I pray that You come into my life to be my Savior. Thank you that your blood has cleansed me from all my sins and I am forgiven even as I say this prayer. I believe and declare that from this moment onwards, , I am a new creation, I am a child of God, I am forgiven, I have a new life, an eternal life. I pray that You fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I can lead the victorious life that You came to give me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

If you have said the above prayer, you are saved. You have eternal life. You are a Christian, a new creation. Old things have passed away. God is doing a new thing in your life. Start walking with Jesus (pray to Him, read the bible, believe His promises) and you are going to experience breakthroughs and miracles. Look for a church that is based on the Word of God (the Bible), that believes in the power and miracles of God and that teaches the unfailing love and grace of God.
